This historical personality had an effect on his contemporaries which was as singular as it was devastating. He was neither a politician, a general, a scientist nor an artist - and yet he had such a charismatic influence on heads of state in his day, from Katharine de Medici to Charles IX, that he was later dubbed the "Rasputin of the late Middle Ages". The breathtaking significance of his role in history is not due alone to his writings and his predictions, or to his fortune-telling skills. It is far more that he was a genius at understanding the fears and expectations of his time and harnessing these emotions. Michel de Notredam, 1503-1566, a physician from the south of France who worked with victims of the plague, came to be known as Nostradamus. He mastered the art of exploiting the restlessness and unease of the transitional period between the Middle Ages and the modern period for his own ends, exploiting it in his rise to fame. He focused the spiritual attitudes of the day to impress the most famous men of the old order. This figure presents us with a fascinating portrait of an epoch of radical change, an era when the dominant view of the world was shattered and the foundations of our modern world vision were laid. This is the time of epidemics of the plague which wiped out half the population of Europe, of witch-hunts, the Inquisition and alchemy... but also of scientific discoveries, the expansion of the known world with voyages of discovery, and the Reformation. The contemporaries of Nostradamus included Christopher Columbus, Gutenberg, Michelangelo, Copernicus and Luther. And like the last of these great men, Nostradamus wrote not in Latin but in his own language, taking advantage of the recently invented printing press. His success was at least in part due to the mass audience he was thus able to reach. One summer morning in the year 1556, when Nostradamus was already 53 years old, he predicted during an audience at the court of the French king that his majesty was to die: "His eye will be gouged out, he will have another wound, and he will die an awful death." A short time later the accident happened: during a jousting tournament a lance penetrated the helmet of King Henry II, and he was fatally wounded in the eye and the neck. The news of this startlingly accurate prediction spread through the courts of Europe like wildfire, and now the provincial astrologer achieved political power which he was to exploit ruthlessly, particularly for financial gain. Who was this world-famous prophet who rose from a modest background to become the superstar of his day? Was he a miracle-worker, an astrologer, a charlatan - or simply a reflection of his period?
