Mr. Ángelo Solis of La Grulla has a huge collection of soda pop bottles. He has had them for a very long time and they are worth a small fortune. . As we looked at Ángelo’s collection, we found bottles of all kinds, shapes, colors and sizes. They represent different companies from throughout the United States. They also represent a different era in our history—specifically from last century. . As we studied their beginnings, we discovered that these bottles are in high demand as “collectors’ items” and would probably bring in a hefty reward. The bottles range in value from ten dollars to over fifty dollars. Among the special bottles were: . 7UP—Although the original owner never revealed the significance of the name, we found out that this soda has, “SEVEN natural flavors blended into a savory, flavor drink with a real wallop (kick).” The soda has bubbles that rise UP. Hence, 7UP. . Nehi—was started in 1924 and was so named to “remind customers that it came in ‘KNEE-HIGH’ tall bottles with the flavors of orange, grape, root beer and peach. In 1955, it became part of the Royal Crown (RC) Cola Company and the drink was discontinued by 2000. . Pepsi Cola—was started in 1940 in 6 oz bottles. Then, by 1960, the company produced 12 oz bottles that were refundable and known as a SWIRL. By 1960, the company moved to nonreturnable bottles, cans and plastic. . Mr. Ángelo Solis has many other bottles which we did not get to study. He hopes to hang on to them for a while longer. Perhaps one day, if someone makes him an offer he can’t refuse, he will part with them. In the meantime, we congratulate him for saving this valuable collection and for sharing it with us.
