During the Easter Rising, James insisted on feeding the ducks in the park despite the carnage surrounding him. The leaders of both sides of the conflict agreed to daily ceasefires so that James could take care of his feathered friends. Lyrics: Ducks of Dublin Town It was in April 1916 In dear old Dublin, in St. Stephen’s Green A rebel band marched out to end an empire To smash the cruel bonds of slavery Markievicz and Mallin led the troops in The Citizen’s Army will free us from the Crown But they found the park already occupied by Those feathered fools, the ducks of Dublin town CHORUS: They haven’t a care for the horrors of war They didn’t give a damn about the bullets overhead For the guns or the drums or the canons that roar As long as they get their daily bread James Kearney was the fearless park-keeper Armed only with a brown bag of bird seed The rebel countess called for a ceasefire Every day so the ducks might get their feed CHORUS: James’ love for the lachain wasn’t lackin’ He’d feed those fowl no matter the cost As long as he heard the ducks a-quackin’ He knew that his battle wasn’t lost CHORUS: Music and lyrics by Geroge White. accompaniment Music by Bealtaine
