Chemnitz was the industrial heartbeat of East Germany. In 1953 Chemnitz was in-fact renamed to: Karl Marx Stadt by East Germany's communist leadership. Because Chemnitz wast supposed to become the model city of a communist working society, as we now know that plan didn't come to materialise. Chemnitz is still struggling massively from the economic collapse that happened to East Germany after the collapse of the country. The population has declined with more than 20% and young people are leaving on mass.
