After a peaceful breakfast by the lake, we hit the road toward the Clay Cliffs near Omarama. These towering, jagged rock formations create a surreal, almost otherworldly landscape—perfect for capturing some cinematic drone shots and soaking in the incredible views. Next, we continue our journey to Lake Pukaki, where the water’s striking turquoise hue leaves us speechless. The lake, fed by glacial meltwater, shimmers under the midday sun, offering postcard-worthy scenery with Mount Cook standing proudly in the background. In the afternoon, we reach Lake Tekapo, one of the most famous lakes in New Zealand. After a quick grocery stop to restock our campervan supplies, we visit the Dark Sky Project, an internationally renowned stargazing experience. Here, we learn about Māori celestial navigation, the significance of the Southern Hemisphere’s stars, and how Tekapo’s minimal light pollution makes it one of the best places on Earth to observe the night sky. As the golden hour sets in, we make our way to the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, perched right on the shores of Lake Tekapo.
