Burgers’ Zoo, located in Arnhem in the Netherlands, is far more than a traditional zoo—it’s a place where nature, education, and immersive experiences come together. Founded in 1913 by Johan Burgers, the zoo began as a private collection of pheasants in his backyard in ’s-Heerenberg. His passion for animals led to the creation of a public park called Fazanterie Buitenlust. In 1923, Burgers moved the park to Arnhem, where it reopened in 1924 as Burgers’ Dierenpark. Over the decades, the zoo evolved significantly, especially after suffering damage during World War II. The Battle of Arnhem in 1944 left the park in ruins, but thanks to the dedication of Johan’s daughter Lucie Burgers and her husband Reinier van Hooff, it was rebuilt and expanded. In the 1980s, Burgers’ Zoo pioneered the concept of ecodisplays—large-scale, immersive environments that replicate entire ecosystems rather than just showcasing individual animals. This approach transformed the zoo into a leader in conservation and education. Today, the park remains a family-owned enterprise, with Alex van Hooff, Johan Burgers’ grandson, serving as its director. In recognition of its contributions to wildlife preservation and public engagement, Burgers’ Zoo was granted the honorary title “Royal” in 2004. The zoo is home to over 460 species and more than 3,200 individual animals. Visitors can explore six distinct ecological environments: the Bush, a tropical rainforest under a vast dome; the Desert, a rocky North American landscape; the Ocean, featuring a vibrant coral reef with sharks and tropical fish; the Safari, a savannah with giraffes, zebras, and rhinos; the Rimba, a Southeast Asian jungle with bears, deer, and tigers; and the Mangrove, a coastal habitat with butterflies, fish, and crabs. Each zone offers a unique glimpse into the natural world, making Burgers’ Zoo a destination that blends scientific integrity with unforgettable adventure. for more information visit the Burgers' Zoo website: https://www.burgerszoo.nl/
