An almost complete edition of Newsnight from Thursday 7 May 1998, the day of the local elections. Presented by Jeremy Paxman. The lead story is a call from one of the Queen's former chaplains (Canon Eric James) for consideration of an elected Monarchy. Canon James isn't very impressed with Newsnight's reporting when he is interviewed by Jeremy Paxman. Stephen Haseler from campaign group 'Republic' and Rt Rev Christopher Herbert, Bishop of St Albans, give their views. (Eric James's obituary explains some of the context: https://www.theguardian.com/world/201...) Local election coverage includes stats from Peter Snow and Peter Kellner, Martha Kearney in marginal Trafford, Sue Cameron in Sheffield, and Huw Edwards outside Conservative Central Office. Later Mark Mardell gives his feeling on the local elections, and there is a roundtable discussion with Christopher Chope (Conservative), Hilary Armstrong (Labour) and Nick Harvey (Liberal Democrat). There is also a long report on the end of the Waterhouse tribunal on sexual abuse of children in North Wales from Roger Pinney. It was evidence to this inquiry which was later the basis of Newsnight's disastrous report on 2 November 2012. Preceded by a trailer for Late Review.
