A judge arrested for DUI is shocking enough—but the story of Rochester City Court Judge Leticia Astacio became one of the most bizarre judicial scandals in recent memory. Before becoming a judge, Leticia Astacio prosecuted drunk drivers as an assistant district attorney in Monroe County. Then in 2016, police discovered her car with two blown tires on the highway around 8AM—and the judge who once prosecuted DUI cases was arrested for driving while intoxicated. What followed turned into a multi-year legal saga. After her conviction, Astacio repeatedly violated probation, admitted to drinking, missed court appearances, traveled to Thailand during supervision, and was jailed multiple times. At one point, she even attempted to purchase a shotgun while still under court supervision. Despite the arrests and probation violations, Astacio continued collecting a six-figure taxpayer-funded judicial salary while the disciplinary process dragged on. Eventually, New York’s Court of Appeals removed her from the bench, citing a pattern of misconduct and failure to accept responsibility. Even after losing her judgeship, Leticia Astacio kept her law license and returned to practicing law. This case raises serious questions about judicial accountability, probation enforcement, and how long a public official can remain in power after repeated violations of the law. Need a lawyer?
