RTÉ News reports on the death of the much-loved Irish singer and entertainer Dickie Rock, an iconic figure of the showband era, and best remembered internationally for representing Ireland at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. From Cabra on Dublin's northside, Rock enjoyed a career spanning six decades, first finding success as the lead singer with the Miami Showband, and later as a solo artist. Rock achieved his highest international profile in 1966 when became Ireland's second-ever representative at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Come Back to Stay", which came joint fourth in that year's competition. One of Ireland's most successful home-grown pop stars, Rock achieved 28 top 30 hits in the Irish Singles Chart between 1963 and 1989, including eight number-ones. Rock's tally of Irish number-one singles has only been equalled by both Elvis Presley and Madonna. Only eight artists have achieved more number-one singles in the Irish charts; Cliff Richard (9), Michael Jackson (9), Ed Sheeran (9), Boyzone (10), ABBA (12), Westlife (13), The Beatles (13) and U2 (20). Rock continued performing to packed venues across Ireland until 2019 and, two years later, at the age of 85, he announced his retirement from the music business due to hearing difficulties. Rock was married to Judy Murray (1945-2022) from 1966 until her death at the age of 76 on 25th April 2022 from COVID-19 related complications. Rock himself passed away at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin on 6th December 2024, aged 88. R.I.P. Dickie Rock (1936-2024)
