Columbia - E-3127 +44161 Chifte Telly Canto Karekin Proodian Turkish, 1916 This 78-rpm shellac record is from the estate of Mary Eliseian (née Jorjorian). While being courted by her future husband, Daniel Eliseian, twenty-year-old Mary Jorjorian recounts in her diary of March 14, 1921, receiving a surprise package in the mail containing a “half-dozen Armenian records Mr. El. sent.” Among the records in Mary’s estate (she died in 1979 at age 79), several are likely fits (in terms of age, content, and where purchased) to be from those “half-dozen … Mr. El. sent.” The great majority of Mary’s records were purchased at H.M. Tashjian, 388 Third Avenue, NYC. Tashjian’s was a significant distributor of music from Asia Minor and the Middle East generally, located in the old Armenian neighborhood of Manhattan, and was where Daniel was living when sending Mary packages. I refer to them as “Mary’s records” affectionately, though knowing that Daniel was the curator. He was loved, in part, by Mary for his exquisite taste in everything, but especially music. Mary’s record collection was essentially the “mix tape” of Daniel Eliseian. (And I think her on-third portion of this collection contains among the most beautiful tracks in my “Armenian” holdings.)
