Shuanglin Temple in Pingyao, originally named Zhongdu Temple, is located in Qiaotou Village, 6 kilometers southwest of Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province. It is one of the third batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. In 1997, it was inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List together with Pingyao Ancient City and Zhenguo Temple, and is known as the "Oriental Museum of Painted Sculpture Art". According to the Northern Song steles in the temple, the temple was renovated in the 2nd year of Wuping in the Northern Qi Dynasty (571 AD), and it is speculated that its founding date was earlier. It was renamed Shuanglin Temple in the Northern Song Dynasty. The buildings collapsed at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, and were renovated on a large scale in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The existing buildings are mostly relics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with a total area of about 15,000 square meters. The temple faces south with its back to the north, and is divided into east and west parts. The west part is the core temple courtyard, with three courtyards arranged along the central axis, totaling 10 halls: the front courtyard has Sakyamuni Hall, Arhat Hall, Wusheng Hall, etc.; the middle courtyard is the Mahavira Hall, Qianfo Hall and Bodhisattva Hall; the back courtyard is the Niangniang Hall and Zhenyi Shrine. The temple is surrounded by a 6-meter-high red rammed earth brick wall with crenellations, like a small castle, which is both defensive and ornamental. The temple houses more than 2,000 painted sculptures, with more than 1,500 well-preserved ones. The largest ones are over ten feet tall, and the smallest ones are only about a foot tall, covering images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Arhats, Vajras, etc. Among them, the Four Vajras in the Heavenly King Hall, the Wei Tuo statue in the Qianfo Hall (known as the "Oriental David"), and the Twenty-six-armed Guanyin in the Bodhisattva Hall are particularly classic. The painted sculptures inherit the sculpture art traditions of the Tang, Song, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, with high realism, vivid expressions, and natural flowing clothing lines, showing the exquisite craftsmanship of Ming Dynasty sculpture art. In addition, the temple also preserves Tang Dynasty scholar trees, Northern Song steles, and Ming and Qing murals, which together form a cultural scenic spot.
