Together for animals: Eurogroup for Animals' Annual Event

Last month, we held our annual event in #Brussels. Over 100 animal protection organisations gathering together to discuss how to navigate this new political environment. Let's break it down. 🎤 We started strong with some opening remarks by our President Philip Lymbery ''Forty years ago, the first animal welfare legislation was passed in the EU. Now it is time for a full revision of the legislation to align it with the latest science and citizens’ demands for higher standards!'' 📹 We continued with a video message from Animal Welfare Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi confirming his commitment to improve #animalwelfare and #EndTheCageAge. 💡 In a thought-provoking #keynote, Alberto Alemanno, founder of The Good Lobby, unpacked the new European and global political environment, giving us insights on how we can best navigate it to achieve progress for animals. An important takeaway was on the power of #ECIs as a legal and accessible tool to empower citizens to demand to be heard by EU institutions. We also took the time to recognise two people who contributed greatly to ensure advancement for animal welfare in different ways. 🏆 Our corporate award went to Kalverliefde - literally translating to ''Love for the Calf'' - for their commitment to revolutionise the dairy industry by keeping cows and calves together, instead of separating them at birth. Truly inspirational and progressive in this industry. Collecting the award, Janina Van Der Drift, CEO of Kalverliefde. 🏆 Our political recognition award went to the President of the Animal Welfare Intergroup, MEP Niels Fuglsang for his tremendous efforts in advocating for legislative advancement for animals, especially when it comes to live animal transport. 🗣️🎤 Finally, we had a stimulating political panel with our CEO Reineke Hameleers, MEP and animal champion Tilly Metz (The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament), MEP Niels Fuglsang (Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament), Marko Potocnik (Vet Attaché and Permanent Representation of Slovenia to the EU), and Christian Juliusson (Legislative Officer, European Commission DG SANTE.G.3 - Animal Welfare). Key takeaways of the debate: ✅ Great success for cats and dogs with the latest vote on the legislation for their protection, which also opened the door to an EU-wide #PositiveList ❓ There are a lot of uncertainties around the transport proposal, and we must continue to put pressure on MEPs 🧑‍🌾 It is important to support farmers in the transition to higher welfare standards. #CAP and import requirements are instrumental in this transition 🐔 Lesson learnt from Slovenia on the importance of collaboration between civil society, citizens, industry and policymakers in achieving progress for animals.
