Walking to a 13th Century Fortress | Soimoș Ruins Above the Mureș

Soimoș Fortress is a medieval fortress located above the Mureș Valley near Lipova, in western Romania. The fortress was first mentioned in documents in 1278 and was built after the Tatar invasions to protect the region and control the strategic route along the Mureș River. Over the centuries it changed rulers many times and played an important role in regional conflicts. During the 16th and 17th centuries the fortress was repeatedly besieged by Ottoman armies and later came under Habsburg control. By the late 18th century it lost its military importance and was abandoned in 1788, slowly turning into the ruins we see today. Today the ruins of Soimoș still watch over the valley from the Cioaca Tăutului hill, offering one of the most impressive views in the region.
