Many videos show using vinegar to clean rust from metal parts but the item I want to clean is too big to soak easily. A commercial gel seemed like a good solution but right now I don't have the money to spare on hobbies. I decided to experiment with using cornstarch to gel the vinegar and the results were pretty good on the test pieces I tried. I'd say 80% of the rust was gone after 24h but will need longer on the more pitted areas. I used 500ml (~1 pintUS) 5% strength white vinegar, as its the cheapest here and around 3 heaped tablespoons of cornstarch. A thick custard sort of consistency. Total cost under £2 The jar was heated from cold to prevent thermal shock and shattering when the hot liquid was poured in. The flat bar I cleaned off and re-applied a few times over the 24h period to check progress. This seemed a bit more effective than the round bar, which was left untouched for the duration. The cling film was added for cleanliness in the experiment and it helps prevent things drying out but It might squish the gel thinner in some areas. I need to try leaving the gel in open air too and see what works best. I might try adding salt to the next batch and see if it works faster These are my results, I'd be interested to hear about your findings Update: I recently used this to restore a precision level where I didn't want to use abrasives. I didn't want to soak in vinegar as I feared the plaster holding the vial would become acidic and cause future corrosion. It worked very well and the longer working time was a help, as I could check progress to ensure no damage was being done to the surface. Took about 18 hours to completely remove all surface rust and some minor pitting.
