The benefits of agroforestry – ‘Working together to trying to meet a universal goal, food production and a sustainable planet.’ At Goldlands farm, they' re planting a high protein arable crop between rows of native trees. Abi Reader tell us about why she has set off on this experimental short rotation coppice system. A short rotation Silvoarable, alley cropping system, utilising fast growing native trees as rapid carbon drawdown, with mixed standard trees at every 20m; all greatly enhancing farm biodiversity. Between the rows of coppice, a Sida crop is grown, which is a high protein animal feed, that can replace imported livestock feed, that’s closely associated with intensive carbon outputs and the deforestation of other countries. The short rotation coppice can have multiple uses, bedding, compost, and biochar. The biochar is to be combined with the slurry to reduce ammonia emissions, to become a carbon rich on farm fertilizer. Agroforestry helps maximise productivity through three-dimensional farming. Tree roots gather nutrients and water from deep in the soil which benefits both crops.
