I use the main ducted upstairs 3 1/2 ton heat pump to heat and cool 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with only DIY off grid solar. I also installed 2 12,000 Btu mini splits in the main bedrooms we use that we can use as well or if the 3 1/2 ton upstairs is not working. The upstairs 3 1:2 ton heat pump will use around 3200 watts -3600 watts while running. It keeps the upstairs where we have 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a loft the same temperature evenly. We can not use mini splits upstairs daily since there are so many rooms. We would need 5 mini splits but that would not heat or cool the bathrooms. So the main 31/2 ton is used to evenly heat and cool the entire upstairs. We use the 18kWh off grid inverter system that has its own electrical panel to run all heat pumps upstairs. The solar panels during the day supply the power to run air conditioning and overnight we use a 35kWh LiFePO4 battery bank. We keep our upstairs bedrooms around 70-74 degrees 24 hours a day. We have a choice downstairs of using our ducted 4 ton heat pump or 2 12,000 Btu mini splits. Out downstairs is a L shape and 2 12,000 Btu mini splits do a great job of keeping the entire area an even temperature. We have one bathroom as well downstairs and by keeping the door open while not in use, the bathroom stays cool as well. We use the power from solar panels during the day from our 18kWh off grid solar system to air condition the downstairs. We keep the temperature around 72-76 degrees. We have a EG4 12,000 Btu hybrid direct solar mini split in the garage. 1200 watts of solar is connected to this mini split directly into the outside condenser unit. We also have a 2400 watt MPP off grid inverter with 2100 watts of solar connected to recharge our WattCycle 24 V battery bank. We run the air conditioning in the garage with the 1200 watts of solar in the day and use the battery bank for overnight air conditioning in the garage. Our garage is 76-78 degrees overnight regardless of the outside temp, even if it is 116 degrees outside during the day. We also have a 18,000 Btu mini split in the garage that we can use. That is connected directly to our 18kW off grid inverter system electrical panel. We can run that 24 hours a day with the off grid solar power from solar panels during the day or 35kWh battery bank overnight.
