In Mid Cornwall, 4 miles west of St Austell, the village of St Stephen-in-Brannel can be found. It looks like just a normal Mid Cornwall village, but just a mile south of here, hidden in the middle of nowhere in a peaceful valley, are the ruins of South Terras Mine - The most radioactive place in Britain... In this video I'll be taking a look at South Terras Mine, a uranium mine working between 1873 and 1930, which even supplied Marie Curie with radium samples. Over 90 years after the site closed, the site is still highly contaminated with radioactive material, with some areas being higher than if you were to stand outside Reactor No.4 at Chernobyl. Please note that this video is NOT to encourage people to visit this place. In fact, I strongly encourage people not to for the following reasons: It is on private land with no public access and is fenced off, and also the site is an actual abandoned uranium mine and is highly contaminated with radioactive waste. For safety reasons, the time spent at the site was limited, however even though I was only able to spend 15 minutes here, it was an amazing experience, especially how what looks like just a few abandoned walls in the middle of a woods could be so radioactive and potentially deadly if there long enough.
