Accra's Vibrant Contemporary Art Scene | Art.See.Africa

Join us on Art.See.Africa journey as we explore Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Known for its rich history and dynamic contemporary art scene, Accra is a hub where tradition meets modernity. Guided by curator and author Nana Oforiatta Ayim, we uncover the vibrant creativity shaping Ghana’s cultural landscape. Accra holds deep historical significance. Its coasts were once launch points for slave ships during the transatlantic slave trade. Yet Ghana was the first former colony in Sub-Saharan Africa to declare its independence. An enduring spirit of freedom is reflected in the country’s art and culture today. Nana Oforiatta Ayim, renowned for curating Ghana’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale, describes how Ghanaian art grapples with the legacy of imperialism, slavery, and colonialism. "In our art, we are still grappling with the dark legacy of imperialism, slavery, colonialism and the formation of nations. And with how we want to shape our future,” Ayim explains. Accra’s art scene is a melting pot of creativity. Here are some of the standout artists you’ll encounter in this episode: Kwasi Darko: A multimedia artist who delves into the history of trotros – Ghana’s iconic, privately-owned minibuses that serve as essential public transport. Nana Opoku (Afroscope): A visionary artist whose work blends Afro-futurism and surrealism. His robotic drawing arm, showcased at the Venice Biennale, demonstrates his innovative approach to art. Joseph Tetteh-Ashong (Paa Joe): Known for his imaginative, custom-designed coffins in the shape of swans, reptiles, and even Coca-Cola bottles, Paa Joe keeps an age-old Ghanaian tradition alive. Elisabeth Efua G. Sutherland: A performance artist highlighting the heritage of Ghana’s vibrant Kente textiles. Kofi Awuya: A painter whose politically charged artworks reflect on societal and cultural issues. Want to dive deeper into Ghana’s artistic culture?
