For the uninitiated, Anne McGuire's 1992 work Strain Andromeda The is a re‑sequenced edit of Robert Wise’s 1971 sci‑fi thriller The Andromeda Strain. Instead of simply reversing the film, McGuire reorders every individual shot in the exact opposite sequence-- The final shot becomes the first, and the first becomes the last, while each shot itself still plays forward. The finished product is uncanny. Interviewed for Cahiers du Cinéma, McGuire notes that the dismantled narrative structure creates in the viewer a strange sense of "anticipatory déjà vu" and a logic of reverse discovery. Often simultaneously foreboding and hilarious, the landmark effort stands a definite precursor to the remix culture of the internet age. Works such as Matt Bucy's Of Oz The Wizard (2004), Christian Marclay's The Clock (2010) and Ryan and Saunders' The Shining Forwards and Backwards (2011) undoubtedly share their DNA with McGuire's 'Strain'. I'd wanted to see this landmark work of video art for years. And so... I recreated it. The purpose of this complete recreation was fourfold: One, so I could see it for myself; Secondly, to port the concept of the original version to the digital age, and to proliferate it via modern means (ie. via streaming webplayer). Thirdly, to remove from the concept from its tuition-based/ institutional-use barriers to access; And, finally, to provide a fun side project for this editor. Upon completion of my version, I found myself conflicted about the third point. In consulting with a couple people, I've come to the conclusion that it's not a fantastic idea to upload the finished product to the internet at this time. I'm not worried about the rightsholders of The Andromeda Strain, as the project transformatively alters the 1971 original and is an exercise of fair use of a copyrighted work. In my initial fervor to accomplish goal #3, I'd disregarded the fact that free, widespread release of my version would negatively impact sales for the artist. Sure, the Video Data Bank's price for access is exorbitant, and this is a separate, HD version; However, conscience continually chimed in, "McGuire and VDB staffers have to eat, too!" Market effect aside, uploading this recreation would put me in a potentially indefensible position legally, as recreating an already-recognized artwork weakens any argument for fair use in new expression. I'll wait on getting express permission from McGuire before any digital release occurs. Feel free to contact me regarding this recreation. At this time I can offer no guarantees as to access. For now-- Enjoy the trailer. The project took me around 34 hours in total (admittedly, my workflow could've been improved) in an NLE. My efforts with new tech made this process comparatively much quicker than the assembly of the original: McGuire states in the Cahiers interview that it took her over 80 hours of manual editing from 3/4‑inch U-matic tape onto a new master... A painstaking, and undoubtedly highly 'straining' process.
