Galaxians, published for the BBC Micro in 1982 by R.M.P. Hanson, was one of the earliest attempts to bring Namco’s arcade hit Galaxian into the home. It follows the tried-and-true formula: you control a small ship at the bottom of the screen, firing upwards at waves of alien craft arranged in neat formations. These enemies don’t just sit still — they break ranks and swoop down in fast, looping dives, trying to crash into your ship or overwhelm you with their own laser fire. Each wave clears only when every last alien has been destroyed, after which a fresh formation appears, each slightly faster and more aggressive than the last. The scoring system rewards accuracy and daring, especially for shooting enemies mid-dive, which is riskier but earns higher points. On the BBC Micro, Hanson’s version pushed the hardware respectably well for its time. The graphics were simple, relying on chunky sprites and solid colours, and the audio was limited to harsh beeps and blasts, but the essentials of the arcade experience were intact. The alien movement patterns were fast and recognisable, capturing the tension of having ships break formation and hurtle directly at you. While it lacked the arcade’s polish, background stars, and smooth multi-coloured sprites, it stood out in 1982 as one of the better early shoot-’em-ups on the BBC, proving the system could handle arcade-style action. For many BBC Micro owners, it was their first taste of the Galaxian phenomenon, and it remains a nostalgic entry in the machine’s library of early 8-bit shooters.
