Website: https://www.tvm.lifecare123.com/puden... The pelvis is a complex structure in the human body. It is responsible for locomotion, evacuation, childbirth and sexual pleasure. “The pelvis is extremely complicated… only second to the brain.” -Michael Hibner, M.D. Pelvic Pain Specialist Historically, general surgeons have used synthetic mesh for the treatment of hernias throughout the body including inguinal hernias in the pelvis. “In the 1990s, gynecologists realized that pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence is a type of hernia, so they got the idea of using mesh (to treat these conditions).” -Michael Hibner, M.D. Pelvic Pain Specialist Traditionally, pelvic organ prolapse was repaired by using sutures without use of any mesh. When a synthetic mesh kit was used, it was placed vaginally with needles and pre-cut pieces of the synthetic material. The mesh was anchored to a fixing point in the pelvis, most commonly ligaments. “The mesh is placed blindly, and therefore we are never certain if we’re close to the vital nerves and structures in the pelvis.” -Michael Hibner, M.D. Pelvic Pain Specialist
