The New Jersey Hall of Fame Awards, October 29, 2023 Sunday night was kind of epic...I had to take the next day, just to take it in. I was performing the finale for the New Jersey Hall of Fame Awards, class of 2023. The NJ Hall of Fame award recipients are an amazing group, civil servants , athletes, recording artists, TV producers, pioneers, and unsung heroes of every stripe, all from New Jersey, and I got to hang out backstage with many of them. The theme of the NJ Hall of Fame is "Everybody needs a hero" and some heroes were in the house. I came out to sing the show's finale "A Little Help From My Friends". My dear friend, musical director Glen Burtnik was at the helm, of this fantastic 16-piece band. More of my super talented friends, Reagan Richards JaQuita May and Khadijah Islah Mohammed, were on vocals, Houseofreedom All-Stars bass playin' anchorman Al Carty was holding it down, my buddy John Martin was there too in the horn section. By the time we got to the bridge of the song, I found myself welcoming Tony Orlando, Lisa Fischer Little Steven Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa, and Bruce Springsteen on to the stage. I remember the different points in my life when I saw each one of these artist on TV and became a fan. I turned around to take in this choir of voices and this collection of rock stars I was singing with, and I kind of left my body and I just flew... I don't really remember what I did or sang.. I remember how I felt. I felt pure excitement, and pure joy, and love, love, love.
