Fairbanks Area In Fairbanks we stayed at Pioneer Park. For $12 per night, you park on asphalt. The reason we didn't park at the free place in Fairbanks is because there you park on grass. After several days of rain, we didn't want to take a chance on getting stuck. Besides, Pioneer Park is near one cool little park. At the park, we did ride the little train around the park. It was $3 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. The train loops the park twice. We went through the park early in the day, so we rode our bikes. The park becomes much more crowded later in the day. In addition to riding the train and looking for some souvenirs, we went to the Pioneer Park Museum. It is a free attraction, and it is wonderful. The museum was quite eclectic. It had linotype machines, dog sleds, period costumes, kayaks, canoes, and dredging machinery. It also had pictures of famous visitors to Alaska such as Wiley Post and Will Rogers. Another thing we did was stop at a pipeline information center about 8 miles out of Fairbanks. It was a rode side attraction that had tons of information about the pipeline. The pipeline consists of over 800 miles of pipe that extends over 3 mountain ranges. The pipeline is elevated for several reasons. The first is so that animals can easily cross beneath it. The second is that being elevated helps keep it from freezing and allow for the expansion and contraction due to temperature differences. The pipeline was completed in 1977. A third thing in the Fairbanks area is the Large Animal Research Center at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The animals that are researched are the musk oxen, reindeer, wood bison, and caribou. We got there an hour after the last tour, so we explored what you could see from a rather small area. The last thing we did at Fairbanks was visit a fish hatchery. It was quite an experience. It was self-guided. Last on the video, we talk about some minor repairs. We had to replace a light, and because of a slight leak with a propane tank, Sharon replaced the pigtails on the tank.
