Introducing ANZCA's Diploma of Perioperative Medicine (ANZCA DipPOM)

Perioperative medicine (POM) is an emerging area of patient care that involves a wide range of healthcare professionals working together to improve the patient experience, reduce postoperative complications, reduce inpatient hospital days and reduce early re-admissions following surgery. The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) has developed a world-first formal POM diploma (ANZCA DipPOM) as part of a major ANZCA-led multi-disciplinary collaboration that aims to establish an effective, integrated and collaborative perioperative care model. Available from February 2024, this qualification is designed to provide specialist doctors such as anaesthetists, surgeons, physicians, intensivists, and general practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of POM, with a unique clinical component delivered in partnership with host hospitals. Our diploma has a unique point of difference as it incorporates a clinical component, with host hospitals offering participants opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a clinical setting. This clinical component is a valuable opportunity for participants to gain hand-on experience in POM and to work alongside experienced multidisciplinary healthcare professionals. In this video, we hear from 15 specialist physicians from across Australia and New Zealand, and representing a range of clinical specialties, who have been involved in developing the diploma. We will be conducting a pilot delivery in late 2023 to ensure the success of the program. This pilot will provide us with the opportunity to fine tune our processes and delivery methods, ensuring that the diploma is of the highest quality and meets the needs of our participants.
