But musically, it seemed to be in DIRE need of fresh ideas. In came a new wave of bands whose influences pulled more expressly from punk and hardcore. Among those bands, and one of the heaviest to experience major success, was St. Catharines, Ontario’s Alexisonfire. Against all the odds, a band whose name you’re not initially sure how to pronounce, who christened themselves after the website link of an adult actress who later tried suing them, and whose primary vocalist is a throat-shattering screamer, had been catapulted into the Canadian mainstream. As the band got more and more buzz online and off in the years that followed, they’d go from wrapping their demos in old math homework all the way to having four top 10 albums in their home country. But perhaps the most glowing distillation of what made Alexisonfire a great band came from their 2004 sophomore album, Watch Out!.
