Today I’m riding the beautiful Sussex Branch Trail near Kittatinny Ridge in Northwest New Jersey. After finishing the GAP Trail tour, I wanted a local “maintenance ride” — just 10–15 miles to keep the legs fresh — and discovered (or rediscovered!) one of the best rail trails in NJ. / ithinkthereforeibike This historic rail bed features: Crushed gravel surface (great for gravel bikes — I’m riding 42mm tires) Scenic slate cuts and rock walls Peak fall foliage views Wildlife sightings (yes… a raccoon!) Smooth, fast riding — no mountain bike required The Sussex Branch Trail runs approximately 21 miles each way, meaning you can get up to 42+ miles out-and-back. I previously rode the section from Waterloo to Newton, and this time I’m exploring another stretch near Warren County and Sussex County. If you live in Northwest Jersey — or anywhere, really — this ride is proof that there’s probably something amazing in your own backyard. I lived here for 30 years and didn’t even know this trail existed.
