Janet’s experiences of leadership and her desire to help others was shaped by her father, a village magistrate and chief. Janet experienced traumatic challenges during her marriage and realised that there were limited support services available to women facing violence within their family. This shaped her pathway to support women facing similar challenges and to expand her skills as a peace and conflict mediator. One of her greatest achievements was being the only woman to contest the Mendi open seat as an independent and the only woman in a race with 34 men. While she did not win, she continues to promote community conversations on the value of women in a largely patriarchal society. Janet has formed the Southern Highlands Women Demand for Change coalition to increase women’s participation and ensure women’s voices are heard. It is a clarion call not only for women in the Southern Highlands but for the nation to work together with one voice, one purpose and one action to create positive change. #womenmakechange #unwomen We invite you to share the digital stories with your family, friends and wider community. They can be used as conversation starters to a wide range of topics on women and men creating positive social change in support of women’s leadership. The digital stories will be shared in the Women Make Change national outreach through various media channels and locally through community dialogues. If you use the digital stories to support conversations, we would like to hear from you. Please email us at: png.wmc@unwomen.org
