Boards where windows used to be STORYLINE: Burnt cars, shattered windows and looted shops were a common sight on Sunday in the French capital, a day after students clashed with police during a protest against a new jobs law. The Paris protest was part of nationwide demonstrations that brought out some 500-thousand people on Saturday. Seven police officers and 17 protesters were injured during clashes at the close of the paris march at the Place de la Nation and the Sorbonne on Saturday night. Near Place de la Nation, damage was visible everywhere, from overturned cars to looted offices and boards in place of shop windows. "They took the computers, the telephones, they cut the telephone (lines). They took everything, and they messed everything up," said the employee of a insurance company which was looted. A McDonald's restaurant was also vandalised in the area. Police said a total of 156 people were arrested in the French capital over the clashes. Riot police stormed the Sorbonne a week ago to dislodge occupying students and the now blockaded university, in the heart of the student neighbourhood, has become a symbol of the protest. The controversy over the jobs law has threatened to weaken the government as elections approach next year. The law allows employers to fire young workers in the first two years on a job without giving a reason.
