Young Artist Competition Winner, flutist Johana Kim is a freshman at Homestead High School in Mequon. Johana has been playing flute since fourth grade under the guidance of her private teacher, Sanda Mašić. Johana’s hard work and talent has earned her numerous accolades, including winning the 2023 Wisconsin Flute Festival Junior Artist Competition, the 2023-24 UW-Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensemble & Percussion Program (UWAY) Concerto Competition, first prize in the 2024 Chicago Flute Club Annual Student Competition, Honorable Mention in the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) Philharmonia Orchestra Concerto Competition, Honorable Mention in MYSO’s Senior Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and Honorable Mention in the 2025 Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Stars of Tomorrow Competition. Johana has been a member of MYSO since she was in third grade, beginning as a violinist and now as a flutist in their Senior Symphony. At school, she serves as co-concertmaster for the Homestead string orchestra, playing violin. She also enjoys playing piano in her free time. Beyond her musical endeavors, Johana channels her creativity into participating in forensics and service clubs at school. The band is grateful to We Energies Foundation for their sponsorship of the Young Artist Competition. This 2021 arrangement explores the final composition of German romantic composer Carl Reinecke. Our talented flute soloist takes the listener into a deep harmonious atmosphere of musical invention. Reineke began composing at age 7, and gave his first public performance as a pianist at age 12. Arranger Pablo García Ortiz, similarly gifted as a young musician, was born in 2005 in Ibiza. This band accompaniment was premiered in 2022, with the arranger appearing as the flute soloist and conductor with the Banda Sinfónica Ciudada de Ibiza.
