In this video, I am working with a mare called Harmony. She suffers greatly from separation anxiety to the point of being really dangerous. Humans do not exist when she hits the threshold, getting back to other horses is all that drives her. This exercise of using targeting, which changes the immediate outcome, is giving her the tools to make rational choices while stretching her distance from her bonded group. I listen to her all the time and do not push her. My aim is that she can stay connected with me, that she remains calm and makes great cognitive choices. Training horses using no force or punishing techniques. Clicker training, counter conditioning and systematic desensitising following proven scientific protocol. The Science of Animal learning and behaviour gives me all the tools I need to train horses in a positive way being in attention to their emotions at all times. Every interaction is training something and as such creates a memory. We train for and build in wonderful memories.
