Hanging Guide Strings in Checkerhead Brewing’s Hop Yard!

Like a lot of home brewers, I got fascinated with the idea of growing my own hops to use in the beers I make. The first year I started growing hops I had 7 different varieties and cobbled together a structure for the hop bines to climb. In the years since I’ve grown my collection to include these 16 varieties: Cascade, Centennial, Cashmere, Chinook, Challenger, Galena, Northern Brewer, Brewer’s Gold, Zeus, Magnum, Hallertau, Sterling, Mt. Hood, Willamette, Fuggles and Goldings. Hops are known to be an invasive plant. To quote Henry VI, “Hops are a wicked and pernicious weed.” To help contain the root ball of each variety so they don’t grow into each other, I have ‘hop boxes’ that are buried into the ground to contain the root structure. It seems to work reasonably well. Hops send out shoots in the Spring that become the ‘bines’ that can climb over 20 feet or six meters in a season. The use of guide strings help give the bines a direction and make them easier to harvest at the end of the season. In this video I show the system I’ve designed that allows me to raise and lower guide wires to which I tie the guide strings. I lower the system at the beginning of the season, tie on all of the guide strings and then lift the guide wires to the top of the hop yard. At the end of the season, I can lower the guide wires to harvest the hops. This makes the whole process a whole lot easier than pulling out a ladder to do the harvesting.
