Maiherpri The Nubian Buried in the Valley of the Kings by David Pepper 6 21 2022

In 1899, Victor Loret discovered the tomb of a commoner, Mai Her Pri, or “Lion on the battlefield”, in the Valley of the Kings. It was located between the tombs of Thutmose III and his successor, Amenhotep II, which Loret had discovered the previous year. What makes this tomb so interesting is that it was found substantially intact, containing a huge sarcophagus, three coffins, a mummy, and many grave goods - including a 39 foot long Book of the Dead, which showed the tomb owner was Nubian.  This was confirmed two years later when the mummy was unwrapped at the Cairo Museum.  Maiherpri is the only Nubian known to have been buried in the Valley of the Kings. Just after the tomb’s discovery, Loret was fired from the Antiquities Service, and he never published a report on the contents of the tomb.  Recently, an Italian archaeologist located Loret’s field notes and an eyewitness report, and brought back to light Loret’s discovery.  This information, and more located elsewhere, will be used to interpret what these artifacts tell us about Maiherpri’s life.   David Pepper is a retired Aerospace Engineer, with a life-long interest in Ancient Egypt. After 8 visits to Egypt over the past 40 years, he has thousands of photographs, and hundreds of reference books about Egypt in his library. He's now devoting his time to reading, writing, and giving talks about the history of this fascinating ancient society. David was also a founder of the Denver Ancient Egyptian Study Society.
