#mentalhealthmatters #suicideawareness #addiction Patients suffer when doctors are sick: medical errors increase and patients lose the attention and compassion of their physicians. Suicide rate among male physicians is 1.41 times higher than the general population, and for female physicians, it's 2.27 times higher. Additionally, studies have shown that physicians have a higher rate of drug abuse and addiction than the general population. As patients, why should we care about these statistics? The answer is simple: the well-being of our doctors affects the care they provide to us. When doctors are burned out and contemplating suicide, they lose their attention, presence, and mindfulness around their patients. The consequences can be devastating, as medical errors can occur and patient outcomes can suffer. So why do physicians commit suicide? The answer is multifaceted. One reason is the difficulty in balancing rigidity and flexibility after decades of medical training. The cognitive rigidity that is required to become a doctor is not always suited to the realities of the imperfect world of medicine in which doctors ultimately practice. The pressure cooker of the rigid, money-oriented medical system can exacerbate this problem, leading to low resilience and grit among doctors. The unforgiving medical system also puts immense pressure on doctors. From long hours to high-stakes decisions, doctors are constantly under stress. This pressure can take a toll on their mental health and well-being, especially when combined with the challenges of balancing work and personal life. But there is hope. Members of Congress have access to the Office of the Attending Physician, which is a different health system than what their constituents have access to. This system is designed to provide comprehensive healthcare to Congress members and their families, including mental health services. This access to healthcare can serve as a model for how the medical system can better support doctors and their mental health. It's important to recognize that the medical system is not solely responsible for the challenges that physicians face. The medical profession is inherently demanding, and it requires a certain level of sacrifice and commitment. However, by acknowledging the challenges that doctors face and taking steps to support them, we can create a system that is better for both patients and doctors. These sobering statistics around physician suicide and drug abuse highlight the struggles that doctors face in their profession. As patients, we should care about these statistics because the well-being of our doctors affects the care they provide to us. The unforgiving medical system can exacerbate the problem, leading to low resilience and grit among doctors. However, there is hope, and by taking steps to support our doctors, we can create a system that is better for everyone. This video/speech/channel DOES NOT CONSTITUTE MEDICAL ADVICE.
