Marine Le Pen, the French hard-right leader and presidential favourite, has been disqualified from standing for election for a five-year period after being convicted on charges of siphoning more than €4 million of funds from the European parliament to finance her National Rally party. Le Pen, the leader of France’s biggest opposition party, had not expected an immediate ban from office. She retains her seat as MP. Le Pen, 56, walked out of the Paris court after the judge told the party leader and fellow accused that they would face a ban from election to public office. She did not wait to be given the terms of the ban, which will take effect immediately, in protest at the verdict. Le Pen was also sentenced to two years in prison, but this will be suspended pending her appeal and a new trial. She was found guilty, along with eight MEPs, of presiding over a decade-long scheme, which prosecutors said diverted funds for MEP salaries to pay for the party’s domestic operations.
