USA: MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENT ARRESTED FOR TAKING MARIJUANA

(30 Mar 1998) English/Nat A multiple sclerosis patient and her husband were arrested on Monday for taking marijuana into a U-S governmental building in an act of protest. The patient, who is severely disabled by the disease, ate the marijuana with the help of her husband in a California congressman's office. The two were protesting against a resolution that would declare the U-S House of Representatives unequivocally opposed to legalising marijuana for medicinal use. Close to a dozen demonstrators - including another patient and a doctor - joined in the protest outside a House of Representatives office building. 51-year-old Cheryl Miller has lived with multiple sclerosis for 27 years. She has taken all of the standard prescription drugs for her condition, most of which have harmful side effects. She and her husband believe it's the marijuana that helped to keep her alive this long. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The reason we are here today is medical marijuana has saved her life. She would not be alive today judging by all her friends with MS that have gone by the wayside since has been using it. She has had MS for 27 years, if we had representation in Congress we wouldn't be here." SUPER CAPTION: Jim Miller, Cheryl's Husband Like many other patients with painful terminal illnesses, Cheryl uses marijuana for extreme pain and muscle tightness. She says she had never used the drug prior to her medical condition, and she says she eats the plant instead of smoking it to avoid any harm to her respiratory system. Doctor Denis Petro conducted a study on the effectiveness of medical marijuana. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It's been validated by six other double blind placebo controlled clinical trials which demonstrate that canabanoids can have therapeutic efficacy in Cheryl's condition. So we have seven, count them, clinical trials that demonstrate a clinical effect similar to what we see here." SUPER CAPTION: Denis Petro, Expert on Medicinal Marijuana On Monday, she took her cause to Washington D-C in the hope that legislators would hear her plea. The target was the office of California Congressman Jim Rogan who voted in favour of legalising medicinal marijuana when he was in the state legislature. Once he won a federal office - Cheryl and her husband say he abandoned those who needed him most. So in protest at his actions, they brought marijuana into his office and Cheryl ate it, just as she does every other day. Their protest drew a crowd, and the couple were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. SOUNDBITE: (English) "He advised us it was marijuana. We tested it. It tested positive for THC, at that point they were placed under arrest and were transported out and they will processed at Capitol police headquarters." SUPER CAPTION: Sergeant Dan Nichols, Capitol Police Cheryl has received media coverage in the past for her protests at laws against medical marijuana use. She travelled across her home state of New Jersey in her wheelchair in a previous attempt to draw attention to the issue. Cheryl and Jim Miller were released for the time being, but they must appear at the Washington D-C Superior Court on April 20.
