Johann Strauss: Die Fledermaus

"You've never heard Die Fledermaus like this before" promises Artistic Director Prof. Ekhart Wycik. "Because we are telling the story in a completely new way." The Weimar University of Music's concertante production of ‘Die Fledermaus’ was performed by 20 students from the Department of Voice and Music Theatre, as well as the university choir and the university orchestra under the direction of Ekhart Wycik. The tango ensemble ‘II Pipistrello’ with accordion and the vocal ensemble ‘Die Katze im Sack’ as musical guests at Prince Orlofsky's ball also provide an extended palette of colours. At the centre of the three-act plot is an elaborate game of mistaken identity at the ball. Aristocrats, commoners and maids come together in disguise. Included are not only alcohol in large quantities, but also lies, erotic slips, deceit and vendettas. The next morning, everyone meets again in prison and the culprit of the misery is quickly found: the champagne. Especially for this performances two school music students have rewritten the dialogues between the vocal parts in an original way. Paul Kohlmann and Noel Luther present the plot in an entertaining way. The operetta ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Johann Strauss is one of the most popular and most frequently performed stage works in Germany. It was first performed in Vienna in 1874 and is now regarded as the showpiece of the golden operetta era. The libretto was written by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée. The Austrian composer Johann Strauss, born in 1825, is known as the ‘Waltz King’. He composed world successes such as the waltz ‘An der schönen blauen Donau’, but also turned to the operetta genre relatively early on. He always remained true to his preference for dance music: it also comes to the fore in operettas such as ‘Die Fledermaus’.
