Modern witchcraft, or wicca, is a pagan religion that burst onto the scene when Gerald Gardner, a nudist based in the New Forest revealed that he had been inducted into what he described as a cult of witches in 1939. 85 years later, there are about 13,000 witches in the UK. The reality of being a witch is quite different from the fairy tales. It’s less sacrificing goats and fornicating with the devil, more meditation and sage burning. So, when we found out that hundreds of witches, pagans, wizards, warlocks, shamans, and general enthusiasts were gathering together in the grounds of a sport and social club in Milton Keynes, we knew we had to check it out.
