Uttar Pradesh is the spiritual heart of early Buddhism. The life and teachings of Lord Buddha are closely connected to this land. He spent much of his life journeying through these sacred places, Kapilvastu, where he lived his early life as a prince; Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon; Shravasti, where he spent most of his rainy retreats; Kaushambi, where he observed his sixth and ninth rainy seasons; Sankisa, where he descended from the Tavatimsa heaven; and Kushinagar, where he attained Mahaparinirvana. At these places, the Buddha meditated, delivered teachings, spread love and compassion, and attained Mahaparinirvana. These moments still inspire people today. With its calm surroundings, ancient monasteries and stupas, Uttar Pradesh continues to be an important destination for Buddhist pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across the world.
