(26 Aug 2020) Riot police in Belarus dispersed protesters who gathered at Minsk's central square in a Wednesday evening demonstration. The crackdown at Independence Square happened on the 18th straight day of protests which were sparked following the re-election of authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko earlier this month. Dozens of riot police were seen patrolling around the capital's main square. The Belarusian leader who has ruled the nation of 9.5 million for 26 years has refused to engage in dialogue with the demonstrators contesting his August 9 re-election to a sixth term. The United States and the European Union have criticised the Belarusian vote as neither free nor fair.
