René Arnoux started from pole but his launch was poor, immediately losing ground to teammate Alain Prost and the Ferraris of Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve, who had charged up from eighth with another stunning getaway. The advantage of the turbo Renault soon became clear. At Woodcote, on lap three, the Ferrari snapped into a spin directly across the path of Alan Jones. The Williams hit Villeneuve heavily, while Andrea de Cesaris, trying to avoid the wreck, lost control and crashed into the fencing. Jones and De Cesaris were eliminated instantly. Villeneuve attempted to continue but retired half a lap later with a heavily damaged car. With one Ferrari gone, Nelson Piquet inherited fourth and quickly attacked Pironi. On lap five, the Brabham moved into third, though the two Renaults were already disappearing up the road. That changed dramatically on lap eleven when Piquet’s tyre exploded at high speed, sending him into the barriers. He escaped with a minor ankle injury. John Watson, delayed at the start, was now charging. After passing Carlos Reutemann and Mario Andretti, he closed on Pironi. On lap thirteen, Pironi’s engine failed, promoting Watson to third. The Renaults looked untouchable until Prost’s engine broke on lap seventeen, handing Arnoux the lead. Reutemann passed Andretti, while Patrese, Rebaque and Laffite circulated close together. Attrition then struck the front. Andretti retired on lap 59, Patrese soon after, and finally Arnoux’s Renault succumbed to engine failure. Watson suddenly found himself leading. He went on to claim a hugely popular victory ahead of Reutemann and Laffite. Eddie Cheever finished fourth after starting twenty-third, Rebaque scored for Brabham, and Slim Borgudd took a surprise point for ATS. It was a landmark win: Watson’s first in five years, the first British home victory since 1976, and McLaren’s first triumph of the Ron Dennis era.
