I wear an historical corset every day! And I have for more than three years. What began with providing a solid foundation for my daily historical fashion, has grown into something so much more. The corset for me represents a sense of security, confidence, and also mindfulness. Creating corset videos is wildly popular amongst historical fashion YouTubers, and many lovely individuals have shared their experiences with wearing stays and corsets for experimental periods of time (often 1 week, or a similar duration.) I have not yet seen many videos about wearing corsets for more extended durations or as a day-to-day choice. For this reason, I felt it important to express what this life choice is like for me, but I also wanted to make sure you all had your questions answered. I reached out on the Community tab here on this channel, as well as to people on Instagram, to ask what you all wanted to know about what it’s like to wear a historical corset every day. 🕯 Support my art on Patreon: / vbirchwood ✨ Leave a donation: https://ko-fi.com/vbirchwood 🌙 Books I read, supplies I use, gear I film with (affiliate links): https://www.amazon.com/shop/v.birchwood 🪡 Follow me on Instagram: / vasibirchwood 📖 Business inquiries: [email protected] I wanted to keep this video at a reasonable length, therefore I was not able to answer all of the questions that were asked. Instead, any that I missed I have typed up answers to here in the description box. More Q&A: Do you ever find that your corset slides down and you have to adjust it? -I have not had this happen, but my guess is if this is happening to you, your corset may be too big, or potentially the centre back length is off. A well-fitting corset will typically stay put and use the waistline as its anchor point, which is why it’s super important that your waist matches with the waist point of the corset. Since you do a lot of 18th century, I'd assume you wear more stays than corsets? -I think these days I actually wear more 19th century corsetry as I have been hand sewing a lot of Victorian things! Do you think there is a difference in your core muscles wearing stays vs corsets? I’d say both can be quite engaging for the core. Perhaps stays are a little less supportive because they don’t reach as far down on the abdomen, and therefore maybe the core has to work more with the stays? Do you do any exercises to keep your core stable? -Yes! Mainly back strengthening yoga, though in turn it also helps with core strength. Which do you find warmer in the winter. Corsets, or stays? (I know it will also depend on fabric choice and the number of layers of fabric used for construction, but generally speaking). -Corsets I think! They tend to cover more of the body I’ve found, as stays end so high up. And that in turn somehow makes me feel warmer. As someone who likely would have had multiple pairs of jumps back in “the day” I’m very interested in your experience wearing jumps or similar garments. -I really love lightly boned jumps as they are cosy and warm, and still offer up some structure. Would love any related tips on style and fabric choices (wool with silk lining combo maybe?) that you’ve enjoyed or thought would be warmer and were not. -I would recommend an easily washable wool on the outside, with a linen lining. Silk corsetry is lovely, but it is really hard to clean at times. Linen, on the other hand, is super easy to clean but still offers up a ton of warmth, whilst allowing the body to breathe. Has your posture without a corset on improved? -I definitely feel reminded when I’m not wearing a corset to keep good posture, as I’m so used to sitting in an upright position, that it almost feels odd to my brain when I’m not. What is a good age for someone to start wearing a corset? -I am not a doctor, but generally I've always heard that it's best to wait until 18 or older. What other materials can be used for boning? -Zip ties instead of synthetic whalebone. Reed was also used! Any good replacements for the corset? -Jumps! :) They can be quilted too which makes them so cosy.
