Even better patient outcomes and faster recovery times are now possible with Bryan Medical Center’s new DaVinci 5 surgical system, the newest generation of robotic surgery technology. Bryan has been a leader in bringing robotic surgery to Lincoln. The hospital began using the DaVinci surgical system in 2003 and has utilized several different models. Currently, Bryan Medical Center features a fleet of six surgical robots, including this newest generation. Nearly 40 surgeons are trained to use the DaVinci platforms, performing over 1,700 robotic surgeries every year. The DaVinci 5 surgical system, designed by Intuitive, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. It allows surgeons to perform a wide variety of minimally-invasive procedures, including general, gynecologic, urologic and thoracic surgeries. The fifth-generation surgical robot builds on existing technology and offers more than 150 enhancements, including: • New surgeon controllers with advanced vibration and tremor control ensure more accurate and precise movements during surgery • Highest 3D-quality imaging system gives surgeons a clearer and more natural and detailed view of patient’s anatomy during operation • Introduction of Force Feedback technology, which allows surgeons to feel subtle forces exerted on tissue during surgery, helping reduce tissue trauma and improve patient outcomes Dr. James Maly is a gynecologist and vice president of Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, part of the Bryan Physician Network. He was instrumental in bringing the first robotic surgical systems to Bryan over two decades ago. Today, Dr. Maly performed a hysterectomy using the DaVinci 5 system. The procedure lasted about an hour and was a success. The patient is recovering well and scheduled to be discharged today. Dr. Maly has now performed a case using each generation of DaVinci surgical robot at Bryan.
