RUSSIA: MOSCOW: ANTI-NATO DEMONSTRATIONS

(24 Mar 2000) Russian/Nat The first anniversary of the start of NATO air strikes against Yugoslavia were marked in Moscow on Friday by a wave of protest demonstrations across the Russian capital. The demonstrations reaffirmed Russia's solidarity with Belgrade. Protesters carried anti NATO placards and marched to the U-S embassy in Moscow to show their disdain for what they described as United States-led aggression. Anger against NATO interference in Balkan affairs prompted a fresh round of demonstrations in Moscow on Friday. The demonstrations were timed to mark the first anniversary of the beginning of the NATO air strikes against the Serbian regime of Slobodan Milosevic. Politicians and anti NATO supporters took to the streets carrying anti NATO and anti American placards. SOUNDBITE: (Russian): "I think they (NATO countries) are ready to repeat that barbaric act, the unleashing of war, at any moment. It looks like at the start of the 21st century there will be wars, people will be killed, and we (in Russia) will do nothing like animals." SUPER CAPTION:Viktor Anpilov, leader, 'Working Russia' Movement State Duma deputy speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky has called for more rapid progress in creating a union between Russia, Belarus and Yugoslavia. Zhirinovsky said that a new state, based on spiritual closeness and orthodoxy, should have united armed forces to allow it to resist NATO aggression. He likened the NATO air campaign to Nazi Germany's plans for domination that led to World War Two. SOUNDBITE: (Russian): "NATO is today behaving like a criminal. That's not allowed. A year ago they bombed a country, a European state. It's worse than Hitler. Hitler declared war, said he wanted to seize the whole world. The Americans don't say they want to conquer the whole world, but that's what they're doing in reality. That's not allowed." SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Nationalist leader Similar protests erupted outside the U-S embassy in Moscow on the very first night of the bombing campaign. In the first days of the bombing, the protests verged on violence at the U-S embassy as thousands of people taunted U-S diplomats and pelted the embassy building with paint bombs. At an official level, Russia froze its relations with the defence alliance and expelled the NATO representative in Moscow. In the end, it was Russia's special envoy to the Balkans, former prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, who played a key role in bringing the NATO bombardment to an end, brokering a deal with Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic during a hectic schedule of shuttle diplomacy between Moscow and Belgrade Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
