Mid of Joaquim Chissano walking up the stairs STORYLINE: Mozambique's former president Joaquim Chissano on Monday became the first winner of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African leadership, a 5 (m) million US dollars gift intended to promote good governance on a continent blighted by misrule. But with only a dozen or so ex-rulers left for the annual award, some Africa-watchers wonder how many acceptable candidates are left to choose from after Chissano, nicknamed "Maria" at home for his gentle nature and widely respected abroad for his international peace work. Chissano, who governed for 18 years following the death of the country's first president, Samora Machel, voluntarily relinquished power in 2004. As president, Chissano brokered a lasting peace after Mozambique's post-colonial civil war and oversaw the nation's transition from Marxism to a free market economy. Chissano, a former chairman of the African Union, worked to find solutions to wars in Burundi, Congo, Ivory Coast and Sudan. Only former executive heads of state or government who left office in 2004, 2005, or 2006 were eligible for the prize, a total of 13 this year. While it was not immediately clear how many of them would still be eligible next year, none has the same stature as the former Mozambican leader, committee members who elected him for the prize said. Speaking to an AP Television crew on Tuesday, Chissano said "he success which we had in bringing peace to our country and bringing development and also upholding a conduct which respects human rights building a state of law and so we are happy and well it is said these can be an example for other leaders."
