In 1935, five men became the first Marshals of the Soviet Union. Within three years, three of them were executed as traitors during Stalin’s purges. One survived, not because he was the most capable, but because he was the most loyal. Semyon Budyonny was a legendary cavalry commander, a Civil War hero, and a personal ally of Joseph Stalin. During the Great Terror, he sat as a judge at show trials, signed death sentences for fellow officers, and even wrote that they should be “finished off.” When the secret police came to arrest him, Budyonny drew his revolver, held the NKVD at gunpoint, and called Stalin directly. The arrest was canceled. This documentary examines how Budyonny survived the purges that destroyed the Red Army, why his loyalty mattered more than competence, and how his survival came at a devastating cost during World War II, including the catastrophic loss of hundreds of thousands of soldiers at Kiev. It is a story about fear, power, and why in Stalin’s system, obedience mattered more than brilliance. #Stalin #SemyonBudyonny #SovietHistory #WorldWarII #HistoryDocumentary #DarkSideOfPower
