Tan-Kote and Resolene are both great products. To determine which one is better for a specific project, you first have to understand how they work and what they do to the leather. The main difference between the two is how they seal the leather. They are often both used as a resist in the antiquing process, but will give you different results. A resist is used when you want to highlight the details of your tooling with antique but not darken the smooth leather. Tan-Kote does not offer the same water resistance as Resolene. (Therefore, it doesn’t resist antique the same either.) Fiebing’s Tan-Kote is most useful on products that you need to recondition with oil often. It can also be used to thin antique.
