Firstly, you'll have to forgive the vertical camera angle of my recording this week. Mark Littlewood and I were in Salisbury for a talk with the local Reform Party on Thursday night as the polls were closing in Gorton & Denton, and we decided that we had to record our immediate reactions to the result from our respective hotel rooms the following morning. As such, this video was taken on my iPad. The result of the by-election is truly seismic. Not only has Labour been trounced on two fronts; the Greens to the Left and Reform to the Right, but the wholesale swing of the Muslim vote behind the Green Party is a harbinger of a new political force in this country, one we've never seen before. The way in which the Greens consciously exploited that vote during the campaign, producing campaign videos entirely in Urdu, completely belies the fluffy image they've tried to portray up until now. This is an operation as ruthless and conniving as anything mounted by George Galloway. Furthermore, the very serious allegations of male heads of families co-ordinating how the rest of their family votes (actually inside the polling stations themselves!) need to be thoroughly investigated and appropriate measures taken. The result was revealing in other ways. Significantly, the further right-wing alternative barely failed to register electorally at all. Advance UK, with a very credible candidate, won just 154 votes. This confirms me in my view that splinter groups from Reform are not simply a waste of time but, in the circumstances we face, a vainglorious waste of time.
