Produced by AMT in 1977 with collaboration from Tony Packo's Cafe in Toledo Ohio, (for the decals included in this kit) the 1977 AMC Pacer Custom Panel Van by AMT was a special model that represented the most unique car of the decade. On today's Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the 1977 AMC Pacer Custom Panel Van by AMT. This is a model car unboxing video. In 1975 a new and radical car was introduced to the buying public. This was to be a "Safety Car" that featured such innovations as the "Cab Forward" front end which allowed the driver to see the road ahead in a time when all the other American cars had long hoods, rack and pinion steering for quicker maneuverability, a longer passenger side door for ease of entry for elderly passengers, an interior width to rival Cadillac, front and rear impact bumpers, and enough glass to eliminate blind spots while passing in traffic. The Pacer was also planned to have a Wankel rotary engine made by general motors, but that never happened as the engine didn't get good gas millage - a real bummer in the height of the 1970's gas crisis. The AMT 1977 AMC Pacer model car kit includes a 23 piece Factory Stock 258 C.I. AMC 6-cylinder engine with a single 2-bbl carburetor, air cleaner, valve cover, 1-piece air conditioner pump, distributor, 2-piece engine block with automatic transmission, front timing chain cover, intake manifold, (the exhaust manifold, starter motor and oil filter are molded in place) power steering pump, alternator, massive belt assembly, and fan for a total of 14 parts. The kit does not come with the radiator and heater hoses, but these could be made from bending wire in the right thickness and painting it flat black to simulate rubber. The interior is of the bucket variety with separate bucket seats and rear bench seat upper, floor shift lever, instrument panel, custom steering wheel and column, center console and the staple of the 1970's, the CB radio. The interior bucket includes locator holes underneath which lock into the chassis via pins. All of these hide nicely once the model is assembled. Under the hood, the 1977 AMC Pacer Custom Panel Van by AMT features a molded in firewall, separate vacuum canister, vacuum can, battery, 2-piece breather vent, radiator overflow & window washer bottle and brake master cylinder. The chassis is a simple casting that includes a molded in gas tank and spare tire well. The remaining components are molded separately and include the exhaust with muffler, front rack and pinion suspension, anti-sway bar, front axle blocks, metal axles, rear engine mount, rear shock absorbers, rear leaf springs which lock into the differential/drive shaft assembly. The wheels are great recreations of the "Baby Moon" style wheels that were popular in the 1950's but the tires are of the 2-piece variety often found in kits of this vintage. The body of this model kit is shared with the AMT Pacer Wagon model kit, however, all the stock Pacer front and rear end pieces have been replaced with custom rolled pans and bumpers. Also, the stock hood is replaced with a custom hood and the new front end looks very much like AMC's answer to a Chevrolet Monza or Buick Skyhawk. Rear quarter panel windows and a special rear window filler complete the panel van look. The decal sheet includes a surprise. While most of the advertisers are usually fictitious in plastic model kits, this one includes the authentic 1977 logo of Tony Packo's Cafe which is a real restaurant in Toledo Ohio that makes Hungarian hot dogs and has been making them since 1932. - Actor Jamie Farr from TV's M*A*S*H was even their spokesperson back in the 1970's. (Being Canadian, I had no idea until I Googled the decal sheet "For Fun" while editing this video!) Proportionately, AMT captured the look of the 1977 AMC Pacer wagon perfectly. The car is fun to build and the completed model will look great on the shelf! FEATURES: 1/25 scale, skill 2 for ages 10+ Length - 6 3/4" 88 Pieces Detailed chassis and 258 cubic inch engine. Tony Packo's Cafe Detailing decals and custom stripes Molded in white, clear and transparent red with chrome plated parts and black vinyl tires Paint and cement required, but not included.
