PUCL Conversation on Caste Crimes, Law and the Structures of Impunity 6th October 2023, Caste becomes a "problem" after colonial rule and the onset of captialism, as till then society worked within caste. It is then that issues like Sati, Untoucheability, company service et instead of caste gradually withering away, caste supremacists have weaponized mass destruction of the community as a form of punitive action. Similar incidents occurred in many other states with the law enforcing machinery remaining a mute spectator and the judiciary failing to provide any relief. This book discussion centres around "Caste Pride..." which examines some of the myths and complexities around caste in colonial period and the period after independence. Before colonialism, Dalits were subjected to the worst kind oppression,. The British opened the door a bit. It wasnt the problem of Dalits but that of the caste system as a whole. Womens issues came early into this. say the right of women from lower castes to wear an upper garment. Or say the legislation around Sati. The history around these issues comes out lucidly in this book. The Indian Penal Code was brought in 1830, when the severe British Stock System was being debated.
