Before considering room correction, I strongly recommend you optimize your setup within your budget. Room correction software is the icing on the cake – not a replacement for the cake itself. In an OK room, it can make things that much better, but in a bad room, you’re likely to make your system sound worse. It does this by applying individual filters to both channels to counteract the coloration of your monitors within your mixing environment. It also imposes time delays where necessary to ensure sound arrives at the listening position without any destructive interference, by delaying closer monitors to match the timing of those further away. To create filters, Dirac uses a measurement microphone (calibrated to known values) to record multiple measurements within your listening zone against a known test signal and uses that data to deduce how the test signal deviated from the original. From there the software tunes your system by counteracting its natural tendencies.
